Responding to the criticism that Tim Challies isn’t really qualified to write books on deep theological subjects, his publisher struck back strongly today. Crossway representitive Justin Taylor states, “Not only do we support Tim, but we’ve signed him for an exciting new book. I don’t think we’ll be getting any questions about Tim’s qualifications on this one.”
Blurbs:
“Tim Challies is one of the finest young evangelical thinkers of our day. He combines keen insight with theological maturity and spiritual depth. His weblog is required reading, and ‘The Canadian Ice Fishing Guide and Devotional’ should help form the Christian character of a new generation of evangelicals. Indeed, we must hope so.”
—R. Albert Mohler, Jr.
“Having lived in Canada for quite some time now, I thought I knew where all the best iceholes were. Thanks Tim for straightening me out, eh!”
—J.I.Packer
“Tim is uniquely qualified to write this book.”
—John MacArthur
“If you want to be an ice fisher of men, you will buy this book. If you read it, you will be! Tim Challies has written on an important topic that is rarely addressed. This book on ice fishing is simple, clear, well-written, accurate and even insightful. I read it all. I liked it all. I will recommend it often. Ten short, pithy chapters—read one a day for ten days, and I you’ll find yourself ice fishing—or at least wanting to be.”
—Mark Dever
“Now THIS book I like!”
—Steve Camp
“The many fans Tim Challies has won through his highly regarded blog will discover in this book the motivation that drives his incisive analysis of cultural events and trends—a keen respect for truth and a passionate commitment to biblical ice fishing.”
—Nancy Pearcey

You’re the best Marc… This was great!
Tim has really “hooked” me with his new book. He keeps it “reel” and I really like the “Gill” quotes he included. It’s also biblical: “thy “rod” and thy staff they comfort me.” There’s nothing “fishy” about this tome whatsoever.
Listen, I know that I’ve been a Bass on occasion for which I am sorry; and i don’t believe that everything Tim writes is carp. We’re in the same boat on this one. Afterall, we both believe the best way to catch fish is with a “NET.”
Thanks again Marc… Good to have you back brother.

Man am I glad to see you back! I trust the hiatus was good. And I hope you’ve learned moderation, although doing a post about Tim Challies and mentioning moderation in blogging in the same blog comment section rules out any possibilities of that advice being heeded.

Hey Marc - Glad to see you’re back.

I’m sorry, but doesn’t anyone else see that there is no way a guy like Tim is qualified to write a book on a topic like this?
For starters, he’s from Toronto. That’s not true Canada, and there are as many opportunities to ice fish in Toronto as there would be in Arkansas. Maybe Crossway should talk to someone from Thunder Bay to write a book like this… even Duluth, but not Toronto.
Secondly, it’s not called “walleye” in Ontario, it’s “pickerel”. Any qualified author would know this.
I would call on Crossway to recall the book… or at least find a qualified author. Perhaps Tim should stick to his area of expertise–fishing off the polluted shores of Lake Ontario.

What qualifies Challies as an expert on ice fishing? Has he had formal university training in this area? A man can read and study fishing on his own, but does that certify him — a layman — to tell others about it?
Plea by Phil — January 10, 2008 @ 8:07 pm
Hey! Challies is from Oakville. They don’t do ice fishing in Oakville. Who does this dude think he is? Challies is not qualified to write this book.

uhhh, a little less weird cover next time? Catch more men? I know there’s the biblical meaning, but isn’t it fishers of men? That just screams of a sarcastic remark.

I just wanted to affirm that I have been ice-fishing with Tim many times in Lake Ontario. Although we have never caught anything and have lost three huts in two years to sudden melt-offs, Tim is a faithful, contributing, quiet member of our ice-fishing team. He is well-qualified to write on this topic… I can testify to his auger skills.
Sincerely,
Pastor Paul W Martin

I think that it would be convenient if “Challies’ Canadian Ice Fishing: Guide and Devotional” was available via PurgaStorio. This book would no doubt be very useful for fishermen and fishers of men down here in New Mexico.
